If you are in the area shown below, be aware of this exercise, Wednesday the 23rd. Thirty-three countries will be involved. Exercise activities may not be generally visible as this is largely a command and control exercise, the planning for which predates events in Northern Japan. However, participants may elect to exercise their emergency alert system sirens and/or loudspeakers. Details maybe found by clicking here or on the chart.
“Next Wednesday’s exercise, Caribe Wave 11, aims to test the early warning system for tsunamis and other coastal hazards set up in the region in 2005 by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) established under the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The exercise will be based on a fictional earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale and located off the coast of the United States Virgin Islands, UNESCO reported in a press release issued today.” [UN News Centre 17-03-11]
