When Cheap is Stupid

klaxonstrongRecently I have seen some blog postings (some of which are echo posts) which tout/recommend the use of light sticks* as running lights for dinghies. Some observations:

  1. If you are using these and are stopped for improper running lights, the official, not you, will be correct.
  2. If you are involved in an accident, you will be held at least partially culpable for improper lights. This may affect the short-term (recovery)  and long-term (future insurability/premiums) insurance outcome.
  3. One paid how many $K for the boat, how many $C for the dinghy and motor and one is choking on the price of a mediocre dinner out for two for proper running lights?

*Light sticks, Glow Sticks, Cyalumes®™ are all useful in their place. However they contain irritants and carcinogens — phenol and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. They should not be microwaved to increase, extend brightness (it’s a known practice).
