Last Bugle Call

John Wilson Moore, MM2, 1938

When John Wilson (Bill) Moore, Janet’s dad, joined the Navy, they still used bugles to pass messages to the crew. One of those was “Recall.” Recall means it is time to stand down from duties. John just heard Recall for the final time.

He left us this morning. He was surrounded by his three daughters who have nursed him non-stop for five weeks. He left us calmly and peacefully on a cloud of their love. Never was a man so blessed. Being a Navy man, he would now say it’s time to police up the area and get underway. His voyage is charted. For him there will be no more reefs and shoals.

Anchors Aweigh, Bill. We are all better for your presence among us.

  1. About the most decent, honorable, and caring man one could ever imagine. So glad we got to see him and he got to see us just a few days ago. I am sure it meant the world to him that his daughters were there to comfort and support him every step of the way in the final weeks. Wish we had more men like him in this world. He will be dearly missed.

  2. Very fitting post!
Bill – What a wonderful man … not so large in stature but very large in character.
Thank you for your loving example, the way you interacted with your daughters and their families but especially how you cared for your wife Mildred.
I could not have asked for a better father-in-law. I enjoyed all the rides along the old delivery routes, the catfish dinners, the many breakfast outings and tinkering on various old cars.
Thank you most of all for letting me marry your baby, Nancy!
    Many great memories!

So sorry to hear the news. I know it was expected but that doesn’t make it any easier. He sounds like a really great man who will be sorely missed.

  4. Great post.

Last days surrounded by football, feast and family….sharp as a tack till the very end. Passed the way he wanted.

His impressive resourcefullness with tools and common household items made MacGyver look like a new born monkey.

A man who made a lot out of very little on his hilltop spread and in our hearts.

    Great influence and memories.

    Thank you Grandaddy!
